10 key technical considerations for an ICT project
At Fagor Multimedia Perspectives we have spent years supporting installers and specifiers in the design and commissioning of common telecommunications infrastructures (ICT).
From that experience, there are a number of technical aspects we consider decisive to ensure regulatory compliance, installation stability and correct equipment operation.
Below we set out the most relevant points:
1. Technical project approved under Royal Decree 346/2011
The project must be drawn up and approved by a qualified engineer. It is key that it includes level calculations, network attenuation, maximum permissible losses and distribution diagrams. The proposed topology must ensure compliance with the values set in ICT-2 and allow subsequent verification through instrument measurements.
2. Installation company registered under Royal Decree 244/2010
The work must be carried out by a company registered as a telecommunications installer, which ensures it knows the regulatory requirements, uses calibrated measuring equipment and applies consistent, verifiable installation procedures.
3. Type F authorisation for ICT certification
Category F is essential for installations that include reception, distribution and dispersion systems for radio/TV, satellite and fibre optics. Without this authorisation, it is not possible to issue a valid installation certificate or register the ICT with the Industry authorities.
4. Technical review of the project before starting
We recommend reviewing conduit routes, fibre bending radii, junction box sizing, compatibility between materials and maximum distances. This makes it possible to anticipate mismatches between the project and the actual site, avoiding urgent changes that affect final performance.
5. Delivery of the ICT certificate and measurement protocol
The protocol must include:
Outlet signal levels (dBµV) in the UHF/FM/DAB bands.
MER/BER before and after active components.
Amplifier response curve.
Fibre optic certification with reflectometry or insertion loss per section (IL).
Continuity, insulation and earthing checks.
This document is essential to confirm that the equipment is working within the expected margins.
6. Choice of approved material with stable parameters
Equipment must show stable gain, noise figure and linearity. An amplifier with low intermodulation, a tap with controlled attenuation and a fibre with low dispersion drastically reduce later incidents. Quality should not be a secondary criterion: in ICT, the electronics define the stability of the system.
7. Technical support and product reliability
Our contribution as a manufacturer is based on solid pre-sales and after-sales support, helping with equipment selection, configuration reviews and resolving questions during and after installation. We also develop and manufacture robust products with stable performance, which reduces incidents and ensures a reliable ICT in the long term.
8. Earthing and equipotential bonding
All metal elements (mast, antennas, fixings, network termination points, metal conduits) must be earthed in accordance with ICT-2. Incorrect earthing increases impulse noise, encourages discharges and can damage active modules.
9. Assessment of LTE/5G interference
The coexistence of radio/TV and mobile services makes it necessary to:
analyse the spectrum with a field strength meter,
assess saturation at 700 MHz and adjacent bands,
and install LTE/5G filters where necessary.
This prevents amplifier overload and MER degradation.
10. Separation of electrical and telecommunications conduits
To minimise inductive and capacitive coupling, the separation set by ICT-2 must be maintained. Coaxial cables and optical fibres must run in separate conduits and not share trays with power cabling.
In short, from our role as a manufacturer, we see that a correct ICT does not depend solely on the equipment, but on the combination of:
rigorous design,
installation in line with regulations,
reliable, stable material,
and technical support before and after installation.
When all of this comes together, the installation is stable, compliant and stays in operation without incidents for years.
